CIVA, a D-11 charter school on Northpark Drive near the intersection of I-25 and Garden of the Gods Road, is an arts-focused school whose name is an acronym that stands for Character, Integrity, Vision and the Arts. Until recently, the school did not host any sports programs, whether curricular or extracurricular. According to The Gazette, however, the school formed an Ultimate Frisbee team this past spring, and is also currently fielding a football team. Because of the school's small size and the infant stage of its developing sports program, the sports will not be sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association. As a Realtor, I am all about schools. And, more often than not, buyers interested in moving to Colorado Springs will factor specific school criteria into their buying decision (proximity to a certain school or district, for example). While CIVA is a smaller private school, its focus on the arts gives it a unique flavor not common to many other Colorado Springs schools, thereby making new home neighborhoods in D-11 -- places like Gold Hill Mesa, for instance -- slightly more valuable to families looking for a solid charter school for their children to attend. So we have a stalemate of sorts, because developers have been unable to build in certain areas of El Paso County since the mouse first appeared on the list in 1998, but at the same time it is important to take care of nature as best we can. I'm sure this is not the last we will see of the Preble's mouse issue, but in the meantime, I know many of our local Colorado Springs new homes builders are not very excited by this news, as the mouse has already cost them millions of dollars. As we covered toward the end of last year, the Preble's mouse has impacted local developers and builders, in some instances dictating where they can and cannot build based on its endangered status. The Gazette reiterates this today: "El Paso County developers have complained for years that federal protection for the rodent has needlessly cost them millions." The Rodeo is truly one of the unique things about Colorado Springs, which is also home to the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Our city's history shines through during the Rodeo, with much of the area involved in the festivities. Our city's flair for all things midwest is apparent in the natural beauty of places like Garden of the Gods, but also in several new home neighborhoods. Banning Lewis Ranch, for instance, incorporates western elements not only in its name but also in its architecture, offering a balance of old-west and new designs, with balconies off the master bedrooms in the bigger-sized homes, for instance. Of course, many new home neighborhoods in Colorado Springs also offer substantial open space, the maintenance of which is a nod to our state's rich tradition of honoring and preserving the outdoors. Enjoy the Rodeo, enjoy the history, and enjoy the small ways in which that history is alive today, even among our new home neighborhoods.
