Hey there little guy. Why you causing all these problems for Colorado Springs home builders?Last Thursday's announcement that the Preble's meadow jumping mouse will retain federal protection could prove costly for Colorado Springs home builders, who just recently have finished some great projects. According to The Gazette, the Endangered Species Act "requires developers and property owners to consult with the Fish and Wildlife Service, conduct surveys for the presence of the mouse and avoid destroying its habitat or mitigate any habitat loss." The mouse lives along the Front Range of Colorado, and Northern El Paso County is home to a dense population of the mice, unfortunately restricting the development limits of some Colorado Springs home builders. The regulation has already proved troublesome for several Colorado Springs home builders:

- A developer in Briargate had to "give up plans for 155 acres of homes, trails and ballfields in a 7,600-acre development."

- A developer in nearby Monument had to give up its plans for 175 acres of trails and ballfields in a housing project.

Will the Preble's mouse become a proverbial pest for Colorado Springs home builders? If the current trend maintains itself, the answer is unfortunately yes, at least for those builders planning projects in populous Preble's places. The current market slump and decreased building permit activity also do not help.
