Colorado Springs New Homes Water UpdateIn one of the more dramatic headlines we've seen here at Colorado Springs New Homes, The CSBJ brings us this:

"Future of Springs could hinge on SDS"

What is the SDS, you ask? A couple of weeks ago we brought you news of a hike in residential water rates via a project to pipe water from the Pueblo Reservoir to Colorado Springs. The SDS -- Southern Delivery System -- is that project, and right now its main opponent is, well, the people who would be paying for it. (We mentioned in the previous post this project could, on average, increase residential water rates by 126%, so the public opposition is not unexpected.)

But the future of our city hinging on the project? That sounds a bit apocalyptic to me, so this is either an overstated headline or in need of qualification, and in this case, the latter proves true with this quote from Colorado Springs Utilities Planning and Finance Director Bill Cherrier:

"Theres been a lot of focus by the media on the cost of the project to utility customers," Cherrier said. "But no one has focused on what will happen to your bills if the project isnt built. The alternatives may be even more expensive."

It turns out our city's alternatives outside of the SDS are few, if not altogether implausible. So we might just have to accept the fact that rates will increase and watch as this becomes water under the bridge...
