Colorado Springs New Homes: Text Message Alerts

Colorado Springs New Homes Text Message Alerts Here is some interesting news today for the Colorado Springs New Homes area: according to this article from The Gazette, three of our local colleges will now be using text messaging "as a way to alert students and staff of a gunman or other crises on their campuses." The three schools are:

- The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

- Pikes Peak Community College

- Colorado College

The Air Force Academy, perhaps the most secure college campus in America, will not be using the text message alert system.

I think this is a neat melding of popular technology and safety. Most college students today have a cell phone, and all new cell phones are text message capable as far as I know. Sending text messages to students' cell phones is efficient because most students always have their cell phone with them.

After the Virginia Tech shootings, America's college campuses unfortunately much less safe than they were. I remember hearing talk of alerting students via email should something like this happen again, but compared to text messaging, email can be a rather slow way to notify students if they are not near a computer. It looks like students have to sign up for the system, which is free for the students. So my thanks and appreciation go out to the directors in charge of establishing these measures.
