Colorado Springs New Homes Tax Rebate UpdateUpdating a previous Colorado Springs New Homes blog post, the previously discussed tax rebate checks were approved by President Bush thi past Wednesday in an effort to "brace the wobbly economy." Eligible recipients of tax rebates checks are:

- "Most people who pay taxes or earn at least $3,000, including through Social Security or veterans' disability benefits"

- "Singles making more than $75,000 and couples with income topping $150,000" will get smaller checks

- overall, the checks will range from $300 to $1,200 and will go to "millions of people"

People must complete their 2007 tax return before they are eligible to receive rebates, however. The benefit here is obvious, although I rather like the way the AP put it:

Congress, Bush, the Federal Reserve and Wall Street are hoping the money will burn such a hole in people's pockets that they won't be able to resist spending it. And the spending is supposed to give an energizing jolt to a national economy that is in danger of toppling into a recession if it hasn't already.

So, if you are wanting to get a little extra money just to spend it, make sure you file your taxes. Or, better yet, I imagine many people will use this to either help pay off debt or invest in something a little less fleeting than "burn-a-hole-in-your-pocket" spending. And yes, I do perhaps echo the sarcasm of the AP excerpt, as I hope not everyone will spend the rebates on candy and comic books.
