Colorado Springs New Homes Fort Carson Pinon CanyonKeeping up with our coverage of Fort Carson here on the Colorado Springs New Homes blog, The Gazette reported Monday that 1,500 soldiers are now using the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, "marking the first time the Army post has sent a large unit to train on the site since June 2006." According to the article, soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division:

- will "participate in a field exercise in counterinsurgency through Feb. 22" and

- is "preparing to go to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif., in preparation for a deployment to Iraq that could come later this year"

As I mentioned back in December, there was speculation that the Piñon Canyon training area could expand by 418,000 acres to help accommodate the incoming troops; news this week is that many ranchers in the area oppose the plan because they don't want to lose land. Furthermore, "Congress put language in the 2008 federal budget that prohibits the Army from spending any money on expansion for a year." So while the troop expansion boost is still underway, the Army may have to be a bit creative in coming up with additional training ground, it seems.

Stay tuned to Colorado Springs New Homes blog for further Fort Carson updates!
