Colorado Springs New Homes: Our Beautiful Third CityAt Colorado Springs New Homes we were looking at the October 26, 2007, issue of The Colorado Springs Business Journal, which brings us a thoughtful look from John Hazlehurst at Colorado Springs as a "third city." This is not meant as a negative ranking, as though we are trying to play catch-up with "first" and "second" cities; rather, this is meant as a mark of the things we ought to pride in our city, and the ways in which, according to Hazlehurst, we "enjoy many of the benefits of metropolitan living, but few of the problems." Our neighbor Denver is actually classified as a "second city," as Europeans cities such as Madrid have "horrendous traffic jams, crime, insanely expensive real estate and all of the other unattractive features of major metropolitan areas" - such is the life of a "first" city.

While Colorado Springs New Homes realizes our city has taken its fair share of shots for being conservative - both politically and religiously - Hazlehurst offers point and counterpoint: the last four mayors of our city have been "a crusty traditional conservative (Bob Isaac), a liberal African American who was once a bartender at the El Paso Club (Leon Young), a brutally effective liberal woman (Mary Lou Makepeace) and an Hispanic social conservative (Lionel Rivera)" - an illustration of Colorado Springs' diversity. The ultimate point is not where we stand politically, however, but where we stand culturally. With our "reasonably active arts scene, reasonable economic activity, great quality of life," along with our near 600,000 regional population, Hazlehurst encourages us to take pride in being a third city, the proverbial St. Petersburg (Russia) or Fort Worth of Colorado Springs.

This designation is not a hindrance to the Colorado Springs New Homes real estate market, though. We have beautiful mountains, smiling faces, room for growth, and we were ranked Money Magazine's Best Big City in 2006. We have a lot to be proud of, and a lot to look forward to, as a "third city."
